Cycling Social Media Platforms: Part One

Using Second Party Apps on Strava: Relive

Over the next few posts, I'll be discussing some of the useful add-ons that cyclists can take advantage of to not only make your social media feed more interesting but to create lasting memories of your rides.

Many of us know the benefits of sharing our rides with friends in the cycling community, uploading pictures of our rides, commenting and giving kudos, but how can we get more out of cycling social media platforms like Strava?

Whenever I do a memorable ride solo or with friends, I always enjoy taking pictures. Of course, uploading them to your ride on Strava gives something for your followers to look at that is far more engaging to see in your feed rather than a simple map of your ride. A great way to make these pictures come alive and be integrated into the overhead map is to add them to the topographic map fly-over video features with Relive.

Using the GPS location features of your smartphone, Relive pinpoints each of your photos and places them as points of interest in your ride. The video flies over a 3D satellite image of the area and drops pins to show the highest elevation, your top speed, and your highest wattage, among other things.

Relive also has a cool "view interactive route" feature that begins with a satellite image of the earth in space, and then zooms into your location. You can click on grade and velocity layers to see the elevation and speed of your ride as you slide your cursor (your arrow, your pointer, whatever you want to call it; can you tell I'm a GenX'er?) along the ride profile at the bottom of the screen.

The platform can add music or simply create a silent video. With paid services, you can add your own video and get an increased amount of photos to upload to your video. This video was created with their free version of the platform so you get quite a bit of functionality for the price of sharing your metadata (after all, it's not entirely free is it?).

I'm always keen to see new add-on, second-party apps that can function with Strava, so if there is a useful platform that you use often and would like to share, let me know in the comments.

In the meantime, get out on your bike, stop and take in the beauty around you, take some memorable photos, and upload them to your favourite social media platform. Whether you keep them private or share them with others, they can act as a great ride log and photo essay of your adventures on two wheels.
